Eastern Dark is one of the most influential rock bands from Imphal, Manipur, known for blending hard rock, alternative rock, and socially conscious themes with both English and Meiteilon (Manipuri) lyrics. The band was officially formed in 1996 by Lokesh Heishnam, although its roots go back to an earlier cover band called Psychopaths in 1991. Over the years, Eastern Dark became known for its unique sound, powerful stage performances, and bold lyrical content that stood out in the Manipuri music scene.
The band’s early lineup included musicians such as Lokesh Heishnam (vocals), Vikram Chongtham (guitar), Ringo Golmei (bass/guitar), Praveen Raj, Zivan Huidrom, and Bobby Nameirakpam (drums). Lokesh Heishnam, the band’s founder and frontman, is also the son of legendary Manipuri folk vocalist Mangoljao, giving the band a strong cultural connection despite its rock-oriented style.
Eastern Dark released its debut album “The Monkey Lies” in 1997. The album became controversial due to its lyrics and musical themes, and reports state that copies of the album were banned and destroyed. Despite these challenges, the band continued its journey and later released “Kangdroom – Monkey Truth” in 2001, further strengthening its reputation in the Northeast Indian rock scene.
The band is especially respected for its ability to perform in both English and Manipuri, allowing it to connect with a wider audience while maintaining its regional identity. Songs such as Ngamu Leite, Kokilgi Lamchat, Achumba, Shiroy Lily, and Ema Nangbu Lairabi remain popular among Manipuri rock fans. Even today, Eastern Dark is regarded as one of the pioneering bands that helped shape modern rock music culture in Manipur.
